Kevin Kernan of the NY Post has an interesting article out in which he notes that Yankees icon, Derek Jeter, has expressed an interest in owning a baseball team one day. Of course, as soon as one hears this information, one wonders if Jeter could become a part-owner of the Yankees after he retires. Interestingly though, Ben Kabak of River Ave Blues ponders whether or not the Yankees could actually include an ownership share in his next contract. To be honest, I think it’s a far-fetched idea, but if Jeter truly intends on expanding his resume beyond the confines of the player title, hey, maybe it could happen. Either way, Ben’s stuff is always worth a read, so check it out.

Here are two quick news items as we await a perfect game from CC Sabathia.

  • Steve Swindal, the one-time son-in-law of George Steinbrenner (he and Jennifer Steinbrenner were married and then divorced), and former general partner/chairman of Yankee Global Enterprises LLC, is opening a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. Swindal and J. Steinbrenner are reportedly trying to get back together.
  • According to Jon Heyman who cites a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Billy Eppler, the director of professional scouting in the Yankees organization, is rumored to be a candidate for the Padres GM job, though San Diego has yet to contact the Yankees about interviewing him. Jed Hoyer, the assistant GM to the Red Sox is also being considered.

That’s that. I’ll be posting lineups shortly.

From Jon Heyman (SI):

AL Executive of the Year

1. Brian Cashman, Yankees: The big-money moves all worked (Teixeira, Sabathia and A.J. Burnett), and so did the small-money moves (Eric Hinske and Jerry Hairston)

Brian Cashman put together a winner this offseason. Sure, for the most part, his success was built upon the Steinbrenner pocketbook, but, they were the right moves and he did exercise a few crafty plays midseason, as Jerry Hairston, Chad Gaudin, and Eric Hinske were very nice complimentary pieces. Furthermore, one cannot ignore that it was he who wanted to steer clear of a Johan Santana trade (and extension) prior to the ’08 season—a non-move that is paying significant dividends in 2009 (e.g., Sabathia, Hughes, etc.).
