Yanks and Sox resume hostilities Monday Night

NOTE-I’ll be appearing (in enemy territory) tonight on the Fenway West blog’s “Talking Sox Show”@ 10:15 PM to discuss the upcoming Yanks-Sox series. Click the show link to listen live. We’ll be discussing the upcoming Yanks-Sox series, plus the Yankee injury situation.

Monday’s Game:Diasuke Matsuzaka vs Phil Hughes

Dice-K coming off his best start of the year his last time out. He picked up a victory and went 7 IP 1 R 3 H with no Walks and 9 Strikeouts against a surprisingly good Blue Jay lineup (4th in AL in Runs Scored). It was just his 3rd start of the season, and while his overall numbers look ugly in the prior two outings he fell victim to one bad inning. His career record in Yankee stadium is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in just 3 starts, which includes a stellar start (7 IP 6 H 1 ER) at the new facility last year. Overall, he is 3-3 with a 5.49 ERA for his career when facing the Yanks. From the Yanks perspective, you could make the case that Phil Hughes has been the best pitcher in the AL this year. He is 5-0 in 6 starts this year with a league leading 1.38 ERA. Facing the Red Sox, he hasn’t fared nearly as well, going 1-2 with a 5.85 ERA in 3 career starts. But Hughes is a much more confident, much more complete pitcher than he was in years past.

Tuesday’s Game: CC Sabathia vs (TBA) Josh Beckett

Beckett hasn’t pitched since his last outing against the Yanks at Fenway, where he gave up 9 ER in 5.1 IP. While that outing was clearly an outlier, his previous starts this year weren’t much better. His ERA was an ugly 6.31 heading into that game with the Yanks, and only 3 of his 7 starts this year could be described as quality starts. For his career, Becket is 9-6 with a 5.96 ERA in 19 career starts facing the Yanks, including 5-2 with a 4.87 ERA in 8 career starts at Yankee Stadium. From the Yanks perspective, CC is off to a good start this season. You may recall in 08 and 09, he had sub par Aprils and was getting tagged recently as a ‘slow starter’ (though 07 , 05 and 04 suggested otherwise). In his two starts this year facing the Red Sox, he is 1-1 having given up 8 ER in just 10 IP (7.20). Overall, in 13 career starts CC is 5-5 ith a 3.74 ERA when facing the Sox.

It was good, 7.0 IP 2ER is a nice outing for anyone. But we should also note that the one time Dice-K pitched in YS3 was last year, and he went 7.0 IP and gave up just 1 ER.  (Quote)

  3. girardi is starting that rivera eighth inning nonsense again..it is may.. not october..do we have two lefties in the pen?/ i thought once we won it all last year ,he would not panic again ,,in april or may..a give away..and blow to rivera  (Quote)

I think you go to Rivera there every single time. They’ve always had a “4-out” rule with him. With the bases loaded and two outs, that’s the right spot for your best reliever.  (Quote)

  4. why have 2 lefties in the pen ,so Mo can pitch the eight and ninth inn… no way if it is a dramatic spot in the playoffs ..yes.. not in april or may..mo is not a kid any more and just came back from an injury.. those 2 lefties had to be trusted . we are in the middle of 17 games ,no days off.. boston and tampa back to back..we play tight games with them.. no way he should be put in that spot.. its not about one game./….their 4 out rule stinks.. my opinion…marte gets a 4 year contarct at what 4 or 5 mil ..plus… he is not supposed to get out thome???.. a has been..who as a dh needs days off… if thats the case Moshe we made a huge mistake in both those lefties in the pen… at this stage in Mo’s base life ..ninth inning only… again unless playoff life depends on it..  (Quote)

They used the lefties the last few days. I have no reason to believe that they shouldnt go to Mo there when they always have. You use your best reliever with the game on the line.  (Quote)

  5. not in the eighth , the game was on the line in the eighth, they brought joba in… so do we not need eighth inn guys? or trust eighth inn guys? Mo or anyone else can’t be used like that game after game..was that a critical game? you must look at the up coming days and the past days..as a manager..it is may..we need Mo..he just came back..he was up in the pen… will come in for an out..in the best case…then sit on the bench while they hit come back out and pitch the ninth..at his age it is taxing.. it was a panic move that girardi has shown us in the past…the other guys were not over used.. it was an old jim thome..those guys are here to get lefties out…Mo has been the best at it as a RHer ..but this is long season ..we won the first 2…1 game back of the best record in the ML.. my point is girardi panics….if marte can’t get 1 out VS an old thome up 2 runs we need to make some big moves and get a guy who can…for my money marte would have come in.. now how many pitches did Mo throw ? if we are in a save situation…do we say Mo pitched the day before? does he come in tonight in the eight? or maybe tuesday nights game ..there must be a line.. not he is our guy the game is on the line in the 8th.  (Quote)

  6. If Mo got that strike call, he wouldn’t have given up that walk–whole different game. He may still have blown it in the 9th, but he would have had a whole lot more leeway to work with.

That being said, I’m OK with Mo getting a blown save in May, and the getting all those first “first since” situations out of the way. They were all due to happen. Though he often seems like it, he isn’t omnipotent.  (Quote)
