Yanks and Sox resume hostilities Monday Night
NOTE-I’ll be appearing (in enemy territory) tonight on the Fenway West blog’s “Talking Sox Show”@ 10:15 PM to discuss the upcoming Yanks-Sox series. Click the show link to listen live. We’ll be discussing the upcoming Yanks-Sox series, plus the Yankee injury situation.
Monday’s Game:Diasuke Matsuzaka vs Phil Hughes
Dice-K coming off his best start of the year his last time out. He picked up a victory and went 7 IP 1 R 3 H with no Walks and 9 Strikeouts against a surprisingly good Blue Jay lineup (4th in AL in Runs Scored). It was just his 3rd start of the season, and while his overall numbers look ugly in the prior two outings he fell victim to one bad inning. His career record in Yankee stadium is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in just 3 starts, which includes a stellar start (7 IP 6 H 1 ER) at the new facility last year. Overall, he is 3-3 with a 5.49 ERA for his career when facing the Yanks. From the Yanks perspective, you could make the case that Phil Hughes has been the best pitcher in the AL this year. He is 5-0 in 6 starts this year with a league leading 1.38 ERA. Facing the Red Sox, he hasn’t fared nearly as well, going 1-2 with a 5.85 ERA in 3 career starts. But Hughes is a much more confident, much more complete pitcher than he was in years past.
Tuesday’s Game: CC Sabathia vs (TBA) Josh Beckett
Beckett hasn’t pitched since his last outing against the Yanks at Fenway, where he gave up 9 ER in 5.1 IP. While that outing was clearly an outlier, his previous starts this year weren’t much better. His ERA was an ugly 6.31 heading into that game with the Yanks, and only 3 of his 7 starts this year could be described as quality starts. For his career, Becket is 9-6 with a 5.96 ERA in 19 career starts facing the Yanks, including 5-2 with a 4.87 ERA in 8 career starts at Yankee Stadium. From the Yanks perspective, CC is off to a good start this season. You may recall in 08 and 09, he had sub par Aprils and was getting tagged recently as a ‘slow starter’ (though 07 , 05 and 04 suggested otherwise). In his two starts this year facing the Red Sox, he is 1-1 having given up 8 ER in just 10 IP (7.20). Overall, in 13 career starts CC is 5-5 ith a 3.74 ERA when facing the Sox.
