“If everyone pitches great, we might run them all out again”
That’s what Yankee manager Joe Girardi said in his pregame interview when asked if the 5th starter competition would get wrapped up next week. As Chris reported yesterday they intend to wrap things up soon, but things could get extended with some big performances among the participants.
But it begs a question, one that I thought would be fun to kick around. I think we know that all things being equal, this is a 2 horse race between Joba and Hughes. Let’s assume that both of them pitch lights out in their next outing, and then again in the next run-off outing. So what were effectively doing is taking performance out of the equation, and going with who you believe is the best choice for #5 starter. I’m going to hold off on weighing in, because I don’t want to steer the debate in any particular direction. I’ll do a follow-up piece tomorrow with my choice and the reasons behind it.
So tell me, if both Joba and Hughes are pitching great, who’s your #5 starter?

The team needs both next year as starters, that’s why I don’t think there should be much of a competition in one or two Spring starts. Joba should have the job, he doesn’t hace a innings limit. I’d choose Joba. Amidst many reasons the most pertinent being: he doesn’t have the innings limit that Hughes would this season and he’s further along in his development as a major league starter. Riddering(Quote)

Joba, but only because of the innings limit issue. Hughes should start games in AAA and wait for us to need a 6th starter. He’d go back to the pen in June or July and come up at that point if no one is injured at all this year. DaveinMD(Quote)

Joba will win, but I still would like it to be Hughes. I just have a werid feeling he’ll be better, likely due to the fact that I’ve been waiting for Hughes to be awesome for soooo long and Joba kinda came out of nowhere Trev(Quote)

I think most people contributing or commenting on this blog want Hughes in the rotation too–just not to start out this year if it comes at the expense of Joba’s place there. Next year we can see “2011: Chamberlain and Hughes: Domination Time.” Riddering(Quote)

Right now, I think Phil is the more polished pitcher. Joba can be the more dominate pitcher.
I would like to see Joba get the #5 spot but, if Phil gets it…so be it…he earned it.
Main thing is, I don’t want either one in the BP…I want them to pitch as many innings as they can, even in AAA. We will have a very hot BP without them. Ken (OR)(Quote)

Why wouldn’t choosing Joba be at Hughes ‘expense’? They’re both pretty much in the same boat career-wise. I believe Phil is going to be the better pitcher-this year and for his career. oldpep(Quote)
