Howie Kendrick 2B
Kendry Morales 1B
Mike Napoli C
Erick Aybar SS

Pitching: LHP Scott Kazmir (0-0, 7.50 ERA)

TIME/TV: 7:57 p.m., FOX

Here are Kazmir’s career numbers against the Yankees.

Here are Sabathia’s career numbers against the Angels (postseason not included).

Facing Kazmir could be what Mark Teixeira needs. He’s 7-for-11 against the young left-hander (.636/.667/1.000). Also, Jorge Posada, who has moved up in the lineup, is 11-for-25 against Kazmir with a .440/.464/.680 line. While I don’t necessarily believe in Melky Cabrera, he too has good numbers against Kazmir. He’s 8-for-20 (.400/.400/.500). The rest of the Yankee lineup hasn’t done much against him, though (Matsui’s .179 BA explains the Jorge flip).

CC is pitching on 3 days of rest. Let’s hope that he’s got enough in the tank to dominate.

  1. I posted this yesterday but just for those who missed it and wanted more Yankee numbers against Kazmir… Mind you a good deal of the numbers represent Kazmir against the Yankees in the Trop so hopefully in LAA it will be a different story.

    Derek Jeter- 4-36… 1 HR, 4 RBI
    Johnny Damon- 6-36.. 2B, 3B, 5 RBI, 6 BB
    Mark Teixeira- 7-11… 3 RBI, 5 BB
    Alex Rodriguez- 3-24… 0 HR, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 RBI, 6 BB
    Hideki Matsui- 5-28… 1 HR, 3 RBI
    Jorge Posada- 11-25… 1 HR, 5 RBI
    Nick Swisher- 5-27… 1 HR, 2 RBI
    Robinson Cano- 4-26… 3 RBI
    Melk Cabrera- 8-20… 2 2B, 2 RBI

This could be the most important game in this series, win and you go 3-1, lose and the series is tied going into a game where the Angels get there ace against the at time shaky AJ Burnett and the series could take a 3-2 turn in the wrong direction so I do think we need this one!

I think CC goes 7 strong and Alex will hit yet another HR and in doing so he will tie Lou Gehrig and Ryan Howard with most consecutive playoff games with an RBI…

    Let’s go Yankees…!  (Quote)

  2. Jeter is almost as hot as Arod right now, if it wasn’t for the fact that Alex is busting a playoff slump like no other Jeter would be the story of the playoffs right now…

Right there however the captain really messed up and his hit doesn’t count anymore…  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  3. Tex barely missed a HR right there and even though he did strike out looking he worked the count 3-2 and put some good wood on the ball so he is a lot closer to busting out than he was last night!  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  4. Gameday has CC’s fastball at 94-95 on every pitch since the first one at 93 so Sabathia looks like he is fine on 3 days rest there, his control isn’t great but he usually has the least control he has all night in the first and it gets better after that so we will have to wait and see what they does.

On his first pitch to Vlad CC is at 96 MPH so he is really throwing gas here early!  (Quote)

  5. Teixeira got caught looking, but he had a few great swings. Looking forward to his next at bats.  (Quote)

He worked the count to 3-2 as well which is always a first sign of Tex about to break out…  (Quote)

  6. I like switching Posada and Matsui in this, the hot hitter protecting Arod right now is the smart move.

Alex Rodriguez just caught every player on the Angels off guard with that steal of second base, the throw was to dirt and the guy covering the bag ended up just standing behind second.  (Quote)

  7. Way 2 go Cano & Matsui!  (Quote)

  8. I feel like Cano has changed what made him successful in the regular season… He is a guy who goes out and swings, he lays off the unhittable pitches but the first thing he sees in his range he swings at and thus far in the playoffs he has just been waiting and waiting and it hasn’t worked out at all!

At least Swisher has been doing what he did during the regular season it just hasn’t translated to a big hit yet…  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  9. 38 pitches for Kazmir thus far and a very bad run to ball ratio but the Yankees once again can’t seem to hit Kaz even when he isn’t at his best.  (Quote)

  12. Melky Cabrera with an extremely Angels play with a perfect push bunt down the line for a lead off hit, very well done! Very heady! Very Derek Jeter almost…  (Quote)

  13. Tex is real late on a 90 MPH fastball and that isn’t a good sign because it could take him a while to get his timing back being as back legged as he is.  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  14. Kazmir looks awful and Tex made him look like he is on top of his game and it is all due to the fact he has his timing off right now…

More frightening though is that no one is getting much off of Kazmir and he has yet to show me anything at all that is good really… I mean his first strike to Tex was a middle high change up that Mark just looked at.  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  15. Sabathia looks dominate through 3 innings! He has good velocity, his control has gotten better since the first and his breaking balls are getting across the zone and down in the zone for strikes.

I truly think it’s a mental thing with CC that makes him want to pitch on three games and makes him pitch better with 3 days… Guys like Peyton Manning want the ball on the last drive down by 3 and guys like CC want to carry there teams and do something other pitchers can’t! It’s just a gamer mentality that some people have and CC definitely has it!  (Quote)

  22. WOW so the Angels get there lost call right back as Swisher was clearly still on the bag when the ball was caught!

This is the second time Swisher has been called out leaving a bag early to sac and it’s the second time the umps were wrong… The first I am sure you will all remember as the clinching game for the AL East against the Sox when Swisher tagged up at 2nd to advance to third and was called out on appeal and replays showed he was safe, now in the playoffs against the Angels it happens again but this time sacing to go home. When you consider he probably should have been out and wouldn’t be on third anyway it’s not a big deal, but what is it with Swisher and these bad calls sacing? it’s going to stop him from doing it at some point.  (Quote)

CC is and has been throwing 93-96 since the first pitch of the game, only made one real mistake in the whole game a HR to Morales who was due to break out and has had all his pitches working for him thus far! To top that off he has only thrown 63 pitches even with that 3 hit inning and he also has only walked one batter in the game… This is the most important game of the series if we win we go up 3-1 and AJ can close the game out and we don’t have to use CC in game 7, it makes to most sense to pitch CC here on three days rest, we need the game, he wants to do it and he has dominated the Angles completely except for one not located fastball.  (Quote)

With that said it would be nice for the offense to get a run or two up on the board in this inning to take some life out of the fans and team themselves.  (Quote)

    WHy risk it?
We’re the better team, the better hitting and fielding team and we’re ahead 2-1, why risk it?
CC is getting by so I’ll be proven wrong but why risk it?
Gaudin could have pitched 5, maybe 6 innings, that would have been enough.  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

    The other Chris H Reply:

Because Gaudin could have pitched 5 or 6 innings with 3 or 4 runs but would he? Kendrick is a beast and Morales has hit a HR… not to mention using Gaudin guarantees you have to use Chamberlain in the 7th and at this point the bullpen needs to be used as little as possible and Chamberlain especially!

We are the better team? Barley and we aren’t the team with better starting depth CC makes us the better team because he can pitch 3 times in this series and they can’t match him with anyone.

If you use Gaudin and lose then it’s a 2-2 series and Sabathia has to win the next game not to fall to 3-2 and Burnett and Pettitte have the responsibility and pressure to close the series and I don’t want them to have to be in that situation of having to win.

You can’t assume Gaudin would have done well, he hasn’t pitched in the post season and his last start was a week before the season ended, he could come out and only go 3 innings and we would be sunk for this game and the rest of the series with a tired bullpen.

There is almost no risk in pitching Sabathia on short rest the man is the second coming of Bob Gibson he can do it with no problem… This isn’t 170 pound Lincecum he is 6′7 and 290 with a great arm who knows his body, if he wants to pitch on shirt rest with as much rest as he got in the season to do just this you pitch him on short rest.

His genius is that in this start he used a lot less sliders and a lot more change ups and pitched to contact to keep his pitch count down so he could safely go deep in the game and now in the 7th inning he closing the stretch and shutting down the line up. CC is a beast and is perfectly capable of pitching ever start from here on out on 3 days if need be but you wouldn’t obviously.  (Quote)

    [Reply To This Comment]

  37. Sabathia has 80 pitches as he walks out for the 7th inning and if he can get through this one he will have given 7 strong innings which is more than either Gaudin or Chamberlain could have done because neither is stretched out enough to do so… The plan to use CC Sabathia for game 4 was not only the smart move it was the only move and as you can see it turned out just fine through 6 so he matched or did better than anything Gaudin could have done and now we don’t have to use Chamberlain unless we go extras which is a huge advantage after what he showed yesterday.  (Quote)

I wonder if Joe would rather rest Mo/Hughes or Sabathia…? At this point that is what it will come down to, if he wants to rest CC he should go 8 and if he wants to rest the pen you could see a CG. Not sure how much Joe wants to do that on 3 days rest though, I doubt he has a pitch count but still no reason to stretch the big guy with a 4 run lead.  (Quote)

Well it looks like Sabs will at least start the 8th and Joe will probably take it one batter at a time but he has the top of the line up and it turns Chone around makes Abreu face a lefty to leave CC in so it’s a good call.  (Quote)

  43. I think without question Sabathia is the best left handed starting pitcher in the game and he is showing exactly why that is true! When you really get down to it I think Sabathia is a top 3 pitcher in all of baseball as good as he is in the second half and his abiltity to go on short rest and his ability to CGs is right at the top of baseball with Roy Halladay.
EDIT: As Sabathis retires the second batter of the 8th with his 99th pitch…
EDIT: and on 3 days rest Sabathis matches his first game with 8 innings and only 1 run on get this 101 pitches… It took him 115 in game 1, he is actually improved on short rest… The man is a beast!
EDIT: what are the odds he sees the 9th inning with 101 pitches? I would say it’s a pretty decent chance he could go into the 9th and face at least the first batter with as easy as he is throwing but will Girardi do it?  (Quote)
