Mariners Ready To Sell
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 28 at 6:06pm CST]6:06pm: Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal are now reporting that Washburn is “officially available” and have informed the Yankees, who plan to make an offer soon. The Brewers also could be interested in Washburn.
Now the question becomes what do they want for him, and can the Yanks strike a deal. The price will clearly be less than the asking prices for Halladay or Cliff Lee, given Washburn’s career track record and the money still owed to him. But check this out

Pitcher C-ERA 2.71 W-L 8-6 SO 78 WHIP 1.06 BAA.224
Figure out who’s who yet? Pitcher A is Roy halladay, Pitcher B is Cliff Lee and Pitcher C is Jarrod Washburn. Washburn appears to be the steal of the bunch, given the asking prices we’ve heard to date. To be fair, Washburn is in a contract year while Lee and halladay are signed to reasonable contracts through next season.

Lefty flyball pitchers usually do well in Yankee stadium. Also, if you’ve noticed the new stadium has been playing much more like the old Yankee Stadium for the past 2 months. Park factor is down to 103, wheras it was 105 earlier.

Its still #1 in HR’s allowed, but for overall Runs its #14, and was #12 last year. 1.028 this year and 1.040 last year. Washburn doesn’t give up may HR’s, I think he’ll be fine.

He’s a flyball pitcher pitching behind the best outfield defense in the league (by a laughably large margin). He’s good, but I think people are overrating him. He’s a pretty good #3 for us though. So I’m all for getting him, as long as we don’t have to give up a top tier prospect.

Exactly, although his numbers imply a top of the rotation pitcher, we only need him to be a better option than Andy Pettitte and make a few post season starts depending on match ups.

He’s in a contract year, so he has to be cheaper than Halladay and Lee, who are signed to reasonable deals through next season.

As long as the Yankees take on the rest of his contract and send over middle-tier talent, I think they’ll get him. The Mariners may wait a few days, though. If Halladay is deemed untouchable tomorrow and if Lee is traded prior to the deadline, Washburn could become more expensive.

It is all about what other teams offer, not just the Yankees. Competition drives up the price for a player. In this market, if you want Washburn you best be prepared to pay more.
