Scranton beaten by Buffalo, 4-1 7-10 Split divx
- Romulo Sanchez took the loss, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 2/3 innings. Sanchez also struck out 2.
- Kevin Russo and Austin Jackson were each 1 for 4. Russo’s hit was a double.
- Ramiro Pena was 2 for 4 with a double.
- Shelley Duncan and Juan Miranda were each 0 for 3 with a walk.
- Yurendell de Caster was 2 for 4 with a double.
Trenton edges New Hampshire, 2-1 (11 innings)
- Wilkins de la Rosa pitched well in his 2nd start back from injury. In 4 hitless innings, de la Rosa walked 3 and struck out 4.
- Mike Dunn struck out 4 and gave up 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 shutout innings. His 3.91 EAR doesn’t wow me, but 71 strikeouts in 50 innings is quite impressive.
- Austin Krum was 3 for 5 with a steal.
- Eduardo Nunez was 1 for 5.
- Jorge Vazquez and Cris Malec were each 1 for 4 with a double. Vazquez also made an error, and he has made at least 4 in the last few games. He must have hands of stone, and probably is more of a DH in the future.
- Jesus Montero continued his recent slump, going 0 for 4. He is 1 for his last 20, dropping his average down to .287. MOntero also has 7 strikeouts in those 21 AB’s, and no walks. Hopefully it’s just another adjustment period.
- Edwar Gonzalez was 2 for 4 with a double.
- Justin Snyder was 1 for 4 and was caught stealing.
Tampa’s game against Daytona was postponed.
Charleston falls to Bowling Green, 6-2
- David Phelps started, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks in 5 2/3 innings, wiht 5 strikeouts.
- Jose Pirela, Corban Joseph, and Addison Maruszak were each 1 for 4. Pirela and Maruszak each made a throwing error.
- Ray Kruml was 2 for 4.
- Mitch Abeita was 2 for 3 with a homer and a walk.
- Abe Almonte was 0 for 4, dropping his average to .221.
SI defeated by Hudson Valley, 2-1
- Trenton Lare was the hard-luck loser, giving up a run on 1 hit in 5 innings, with 0 walks and 8 strikeouts. Lare probably could have pitched longer, but he was ejected after hitting Dustin Biell (in retaliation for the beaning of Jimmy Paredes). Biell ended up coming around to score, so Lare was charged with the run.
- Jimmy Paredes was 0 for 3.
- Carmen Angelini was 2 for 3 with a double.
- Zoilo Almonte was 0 for 2 with 2 walks.
- Kyle Higashioka and Kelvin Castro were each 0 for 4.
- Hector Rabago was 1 for 3 with a walk and a double.
- DeAngelo Mack was 1 for 4.
- Luke Murton was 1 for 4 with a double.
GCL Yanks defeat Pirates, 3-1
- 2008 draftee Mikey O’Brien got the start, and pitched well, allowing a run on 2 hits in 4 innings, with 4 strikeouts.
- Ramon Flores was 0 for 2 with a walk. The 17 year-old is struggling in his US debut, batting a meager .121. He has time to turn it around.
- Jose Toussen was 1 for 4.
- Kevin Mahoney was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.
- Kelvin De Leon was 2 for 4, raising his average to .366.
- Eduardo Sosa was 0 for 4. While it’s early and in a small sample size, it is worthy of note that Sosa is hitless against lefties this season (albeit, in only 10 AB’s), but is hitting a cool .444 against righties (in 18 AB’s). Something to keep an eye on.
- Francisco Arcia was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk.
That’s all for tonight. As Mike from RAB mentioned in Down on the Farm tonight, bonus baby Gary Sanchez will in fact not be playing in the GCL this season. He’ll most likely spend time in instructional league this year, play some winter ball, start in extended spring training, and catch for the GCL Yankees at the tender age of 17.
