Were you upset with Joba’s 8 run outing during yesterday’s game? Well, Joba wasn’t. Here’s his quotes
via Ken Davidoff:
“It’s a win at the end of the day,” Chamberlain told reporters. “I didn’t throw well at all, but at the end of the day, 10 to 8, the Yankees win. There’s really not much to be mad about.”
“I did a good job today [of attacking hitters], I felt like,” he said. “They’re great hitters. I threw good pitches and they put good swings on it. They’ve been doing it all year. They’re going to continue to do it.”
The Border movies After the Sunset movie Asked why Girardi thought he didn’t attack the hitters, the pitcher said of his manager, “You’d have to ask him that.”
“At the end of the day,” he said, explaining why the boos didn’t bother him, “the sun comes up, and I’ve still got a job. I give everything I have every time I go out. If that’s not enough, then I don’t know what is.”
Oh, the Sun came up. Gotcha. So as long as the Sun comes up, then everything is OK in the fairytale place called Jobaville. When Ian Kennedy made similarly delusional comments, he got destroyed by the NY media. But Joba gets a pass? Has he really accomplished so much that he deserves one?
Its one thing to have a pitcher understand the nature of the game and give credit to the opposition, its another for him to have absolutely no concept of the idea that he pitched like shit, and seems to have no pride whatsoever in his job performance.
buy Border Wars He said “They’re great hitters.” No Joba, they’re not all great. They’re 6th in the AL in Runs Scored. That’s middle of the pack, not “Great”. And he pitched especially badly after the Ransom error in the 4th inning. 5 Runs scored, all with two outs, and Joba was unable to get out of the inning. You would understand a run or two in that spot, but 5 and a man LOB for Albaladejo to have to pick up is simply doing a horrible job. He only threw 86 pitches, so he shouldn’t have been out of gas at that point.
I can’t improve upon Ken Davidoff’s closing remarks, so I’ll just post them:
He hasn’t been awful this year, and please don’t misinterpret this as a call to return Chamberlain to the bullpen. But really, what he did Sunday wasn’t enough. Not by anyone’s standards other than, apparently, his own.
Well said, Ken. Hope Joba is listening, but I doubt it.

It’s hard to say, sometimes, when a young pitcher faces adversity for the first time, whether he simply does nto know what to say or he’s clueless about how poorly he performed. Joba’s words don’t match the reality of his poor pitching on Sunday. In particular, his inability to get ahead of hitters in the count is a glaring shortcoming at this point.

I think the heat would have been 10 times worse on Joba had the Yanks lost the game. But he was given a 4-0 lead and left the game in an 8-4 hole, so he can claim no contribution to the team’s victory. He was just another obstacle that needed to be overcome.
Pitchers will have games where they just don’t have it, but this outing was all too similar to many of his outings this year. He just didn’t have his rabbit’s foot today.

Garbage, Garbage, Garbage-and te worst of it is I was going to give him a pass when I saw how bad David Price was but this guy is gutless and the worst of it is Girardi will not confront him. I said it ast wek say it again if he goesout next time and cant throw aboove 95 consistently pull him right away-make a point

I think he has been talking with Ian too much. Come on Joba, own up to your bad outings like AJ and then go out and string something together so we can move on and complain about someone else.

Right now, Yankees don’t have enough starting pitching.
Joba is not going to beat the Red Sox with his straight 92-93 MPH heater and no command of his breaking stuff.
Pettitte is fair at best and Wang probably isn’t going to be Wang until next season.
Yankees have CC and AJ and pray for rain.
Forget a left handed reliever.YAnkees need to find an innings eater #3 starter.

I don’t care what pitchers say after games. Joba has a 108 ERA+, which ain’t bad for a 23 year old starter. He’s had a some poor games and some games he didn’t allow many runs but had to leave early. He needs to improve in that regard. The rest of it will be forgotten as soon as he strings together a few good starts.

Yeah I agree with you oldpep, I think people get too carried away with postgame interviews. I don’t even watch it because I find it to be irrelevant.
Players get paid for how they perform on the field, not how they answer questions after the game. If Joba had said during his interview that he was sorry and it was unacceptable, would that have made his start okay?
Did people go easier on Arod after he said he played like a dog in the postseason?
Criticize Joba if he gets tattooed in his next start, not what he says after a game.

Steve, I’m SO glad that you wrote this because I thought the exact same thing when I read Joba’s comments. It was really ridiculous for him to say what he said and, to be honest, if the Yankees had some more depth I would be all for Joba going to the minors in order for him to understand that if you want to be a starter, you need to perform at a certain level.
