With today being July 2nd, news of IFA signings will be coming fast and furious all day. The Yankees have scheduled a 6 PM news conference to announce the signing of IFA Catcher Gary Sanchez according to Jorge Arangure. The Cards are expected to announce a deal with Wagner Mateo sometime today, and expect the Mets to lock up Juan Urbina early on as well.

Its important to remember that these kids are 16 years old, so there’s plenty of room for growth and much can change in the 4-5 years between now and when you might start seeing them in the bigs. Many of the best IFA’s turn out to not be the lesser signings, not the big bonus ones.

I found it interesting that these rankings were not based on talent, but rather on the amount of money they would receive as bonuses.
While it seems logical that there would be a strong correlation, I think after the first 5 guys or so, there is not going to be a stark difference between the next batch of kids.
By the way, Arangure says that they signed Damian Arredondo for $850,000 and he’s hearing $400,000 for Christopher Cabrera.
