He had Rivera showing that he was the better reliever (even though Wetteland was CRAZY good even after he left) and he therefore allowed him to take the role over a WS champion closer. Same deal with Wells, he came in third in the Cy Young voting the year before and had proven to be a fan favorite (TEH PERFECT GAME!!) but he traded him in the right deal.
