Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus has the scoop, the Yanks appear close to landing the best available IFA Catcher, adding to their already considerable depth at the position.  Here’s the story:

“Sources indicate that the Angels were the only other team bidding against the Yankees for top July 2nd catching prospect Gary Sanchez (and here’s his scouting report) and it’s assumed this development only increases the odds that Sanchez will sign with the Bombers. The Yankees feel Sanchez is the top July 2nd prospect this year, and multiple sources indicate that the Yankees are expected to eventually agree to terms with Sanchez on a bonus somewhere in the $3.1-3.4 million range.”

Restraint move I find it interesting that the Angels were the only other team bidding, that could play in to what I discussed yesterday

, how the economy is affecting teams ability to bid on these young players. Could also be a indicator of how today’s draft will play out.  But its also very possible Sanchez was simply linked to the Yanks from the beginning, and other teams didn’t feel the need to get into a bidding war with them over him. Though that didn’t stop Billy Beane last year. Last year Michael Inoa had a contract all but signed with the Yanks, and the A’s swooped in and grabbed him at the last minute.

One scout thinks Beltre the other Dominican Catcher is the better prospect.Say’s Beltre plays with much more passion than the further advanced Sanchez and you can’t teach passion for the game.  (Quote)

There is absolutely zero comparison between Sanchez and Beltre, in no way, shape, or form. Sanchez would easily be a top 5 pick in the USA if he were given the opportunity to hit with aluminum. He throws 1.8 to 2nd base and runs a 6.9 60. There is no question about his age and he has the ability to turn his game on to the highest level when facing superior competition. As we all know there is a lot of mis information when it comes to Latin American signings so don’t be surprised when the Yankees DON’T sign sanchez.  (Quote)

This site (http://dominicanbaseballuniverse.blogspot.com/) has been predicting the Yankees signing Sanchez for a while. The writer there had this to say about Sanchez:

“Now there are some players who are very special, if Gary Sanchez is not on roids and his age is real, he is worth more than 3 million easily.”

Not too shabby. Sounds like a good potential signing, and hopefully they’ll get some other guys as well (though Sanchez will likely be the only multi-million dollar bonus they hand out on July 2).  (Quote)

After their success with Montero, Romine, ect. I’m completely comfortable with the Yankee’s ability to scout catching. I’d say they probably have the whole Posada retiring thing covered and should have some powerful trade chips for the next 6 years if they can get a few of these guys to the show  (Quote)

I’d say young catchers are the most valuable trading commodity out there. I’m sure you could make a strong case for a young SS or CF, but with the frequency that catchers break down it just seems like teams are always looking for a new one.

Also you could argue pitchers, but they are just so hard to predict and always seem to face injuries that I think their value drops a bit in a big trade.  (Quote)
