A report hit the Internet Wednesday that Bob Sheppard, the Yankees’ legendary public address announcer, had decided to officially retire. But Sheppard’s son, Paul, told the Yankees that the report was “categorically untrue.”
The New York Times story cited Paul Doherty, a friend and former agent of the PA announcer, who said Sheppard’s son had informed him of the 98-year-old’s plans.
Jason Zillo, the Yankees’ media relations director, confirmed that Sheppard will not work either of the Cubs exhibitions or the April 16 home opener, but that was all the information that was available.
“(Paul Sheppard) was very clear that the report is categorically untrue,” Zillo said. “Paul Sheppard has not said anything remotely like that.”
Good news. The stadium wouldn’t be the same without him.
