The Yankees beat the rays, 5-1, in today’s game.

I think the pitching has been great. Even the ones that have been a little wild have been able to manage their damage — Hughes and Cox today — Veras yesterday. And you have to expect a little wildness this time of the year.

I suppose this is the time when pitchers are “just trying to get their work in.” But the ability to manage damage is a good thing that we have not always seen from Yankee pitchers, particularly the bullpen. Too often it has seemed in the past that the pitcher gives up a walk, or hits a batter, and all of a sudden there’s three runs on the board.

I agree. I mean, I’m not going to judge a pitcher’s ability based on what he’s doing during exhibition games — not yet anyway — however, we have a solider relief corps, with a tremendous amount of talent. There’s a reason to be excited about our pitching in 2009.
